Advanced Nitrification

The second stage of nitrification is crucial. Nitrite (NO2) is the

                                       food source for Nitrobacter.

Nitrobacter converts Nitrite (NO2) to Nitrate (NO3) and more

Nitric Acid (HNO3). However, Nitrates do not produce

chloramines and interfere with free chlorine residual.

Aeration Basin pH will continue to drop if the alkalinity is not

sufficient. Oftentimes, wastewater facilities need to add alkalinity

with Calcium (Lime), Sodium Hydroxide, or Magnesium Oxide.
