Advanced Nitrification
Nitrifier Biology
Proteins in the wastewater breakdown to form ammonia compounds.
Ammonia, in its common wastewater form is called Ammonium (NH4).
Nitrifiers feed on food sources extracted from soluble and insoluble
ammonia and nitrogen.
Nitrosomonas feed on Ammonium utilizing a process called Oxidation.
Oxidizing within the Nitrosomonas cell burns nitrogen as an energy
source, converting NH4 to Nitrite (NO2) and Nitric Acid (HNO3).
