Advanced Nitrification
Nitrifier Biology cont.
Nitrite and Nitric Acid are the first step of the Nitrification process
however, this first step produces 2 process problems:
1. Nitric Acid formation, lowering pH in the Aeration Basin which
can inhibit nitrification, if pH falls below 6.7
2. Nitrites (NO2), which will combine with downstream disinfection
system chlorine, producing chloramines
Chloramines are a weaker form of chlorine and are not detectable
with conventional free chlorine residual analysis. Chloramines are
not as potent of an oxidizer as free chlorine and contribute to
ineffective fecal coliform kill and permit violations.
