Advanced Nitrification
It is important to note that nitrification can be inhibited in 2 ways.
1. An accumulation of Nitric Acid waste within the mixed liquor will
suppress or inhibit Nitrification.
2. High influent BOD can also inhibit Nitrification by altering the Food to
Mass ratio. Remembering that Nitrification requires a minimum F:M of
0.2, let’s look at an example of how higher BOD can affect F:M.
You can see that with increased influent BOD load, the higher amount of
food increased the F:M, exceeding the minimum 0.2 F:M target.
When slugs of high BOD concentration flow through a facility, the
immediate loss of Nitrite and Nitrate concentration can be measured and
tracked.
