Pumps and their Applications
Packing Gland:
The packing gland includes a stuffing box filled with coiled ropes of packing and
retained by a lantern ring. Two threaded studs with nuts tighten down on the
internal packing to compensate for packing wear.
The packing gland nut adjustments must be performed on a regular basis by
tightening one flat at a time, alternating sides when tightening. The Operator
must visually ensure the seal water system is providing enough water supply by
monitoring the drip rate from the bottom of the stuffing box.
Exiting seal water drip rate should be approximately one drip per second.
Packing is a wearable part, requiring regular adjustments and packing
replacement.
Pump bearings require regular greasing. Pump motors also require greasing, but
sparingly and at intervals defined within the pump O&M Manual.
