Advanced Nitrification
Chloramines
Nitrosomonas produce nitrites (NO2). Nitrites combine with chlorine and
produce Chloramines.
Chloramines are weaker molecular cousins of the desired hydrochlorus
acid molecule that effectively oxidizes pathogens.
Chloramines are not detected as free chlorine residual. Chloramines do
not effectively oxidize or disinfect.
The disinfection result is low recorded free chlorine residuals and the
potential for fecal coliform violations.
Simply increasing chlorine residual will not result in proportionately
higher free chlorine residual but will instead produce more chloramine.
