Instrument cannulae are available in different diameters and lengths and
a selection of diameters should be available enabling selection of a suit-
ably small-diameter cannula for small joints, and using the more con-
venient larger diameter cannulae in larger joints. Some cannulae are
supplied with their own dedicated obturator (blunt ones are preferred)
to enable introduction into the articular cavity. Some cannulae have a
removable soft rubberised diaphragm that enables insertion and removal
of instruments while limiting fluid loss from the joint. Use of instrument
