Imprint
• Advantages
Appropriate for ulcerated, wet, thin lesions, which are not suitable for fine needle aspiration.
• Disadvantages
The sample obtained is only representative of the superficial part of the lesion.
• Technique
Gently blot the tissue of interest with a sterile gauze to remove surface blood. Touch the
surface of the lesion with the slide.
Swab
• Advantages
Appropriate for evaluation of cavities, sinus tracts and draining lesions (e.g. ear swabs,
vaginal swabs).
• Technique
Insert the swab inside the sinus tract or draining lesion. Extract the swab and roll it along
the slide.
