               Immune complexes formed by the combination of antibodies with
               antigen activate the classical complement pathway. When these
               complexes are deposited in tissues, the activated complement

               generates chemotactic peptides that attract neutrophils. The
               accumulated neutrophils may then release oxidants and enzymes,
               causing acute inflammation and tissue destruction. Lesions
               generated in this way are classified as type III or immune complex–

               mediated hypersensitivity reactions.
