In specialist dental clinics and many equine practices the use of a rigid intraoral
endoscope with a bright light source and magnified image allows the teeth and soft tissues at
the back of the mouth to be properly inspected and aids identification of diseased teeth and
gums. Video or still images may be saved for future reference.
The findings are recorded on a dental chart (see Figure 2.1). This also has information on
the treatment given and recommendations for future examination intervals and treatment.
The dental programme
It is recommended that foals are checked at or shortly after birth to ensure that their incisors
meet normally and they do not have a parrot mouth. This is a condition where the lower jaw
