THE PARTIALLY-SIGHTED HORSE
VetBooks.ir Sight may be lost because of a cataract or other eye conditions such as glaucoma or severe
recurrent uveitis. It may also be lost following a serious injury or if the eye has to be
removed to prevent the spread of a tumour (Figures 21.18 and 21.19). These horses require
careful management to minimize the potential for hurting themselves or their handlers. For
example:
• partially-sighted horses should be approached and handled with particular care so that
they are not startled
• they should not be tied near projecting objects
• the field should be checked for low branches or obstacles that could cause injury
• affected horses may feel more comfortable turned out with a single companion rather
than as part of a large group.
