Figure 21.17 Chronic uveitis: following recurrent episodes of the disease, the pupil is an irregular shape and there are
multiple pigmented deposits on the anterior lens capsule
Prognosis
In general, the prognosis is guarded to poor. It depends on the cause, the frequency and
severity of episodes and how promptly the treatment is given. Early recognition of the signs
is very important. Once the diagnosis is established, the vet may leave emergency treatment
with you for subsequent episodes. However, it is important that the horse is examined
promptly by the vet every time to check that there is no other injury to the eye.
The disease is unpredictable and a source of severe misery and discomfort. If the
inflammation is not adequately controlled by the medication and the horse is in permanent
discomfort, the eye can be removed.
