months or years. In many cases the inflammation never really subsides, just quietly persists.

        These  horses  may  benefit  from  long-term  or  permanent  medication  provided  there  is  no

             With each attack, further degenerative changes occur within the eye. The changes include
        the following.

        •    There  is  a  gradual  reduction  in  intra-ocular  pressure  and  the  eyeball  becomes  smaller
             (Figure 21.13(b)).

        •    Retinal degeneration and cataract formation cause a progressive loss of sight.

        •    In some cases, the iris does not dilate fully despite the administration of atropine. The
             pupil margin becomes irregular in outline as parts of the iris remain attached to the lens.

             Pigmented deposits can be seen on the anterior lens capsule. (Figure 21.17.)
