INDWELLING NASOLACRIMAL CANNULA
The nasolacrimal duct runs from the inner corner of the eye to an opening on the floor of the
nostril. Its function is to drain excess tear film from the eyes. With the horse sedated, the end
of the cannula is passed through a small incision in the skin of the false nostril. It is gently
slid into the nasal opening of the duct and sutured in place. The remaining length of the
tubing is sutured at intervals along the face and neck. Medication can then be introduced
without any handling of the eye. (Figure 21.24.)
