TREATMENT OPTIONS
These include the following.
• Chemotherapy. Topical 5-fluorouracil is applied to the tumour through a subpalpebral
lavage system. The horse must be hospitalized during treatment periods as the drug is
radioactive.
• Surgical excision. This is often combined with topical chemotherapy. If the tumour is
large, the bulk of it is surgically removed prior to the commencement of chemotherapy.
• Irradiation: strontium plesiotherapy (see page 605).
