        Horse flies (Tabanus spp.) suck blood from the neck, legs and underside of the horse. Their

        bite is very painful and causes raised wheals. Horses will often become anxious and gallop
        around the field trying to escape from them.

        Bots (Gasterophilus spp.) irritate the horse as they lay their eggs.



        Total  fly  control  is  virtually  impossible,  although  some  success  is  achieved  with  the

        following measures.



        Shelter

        Provision  of  a  cool,  clean  shelter  is  the  most  effective  method  of  fly  control.  During  hot
