weather, horses benefit from being stabled by day and turned out at night. The shelter should

        be situated as far as possible from fly breeding grounds such as stagnant water and the muck
  VetBooks.ir  heap. Screening the door and windows with a fine mesh may help to protect the horse from
        Culicoides midges. Some yards use fans in their barns to keep the flies away. Where there is

        no shelter available, the horse should have access to some shade.



        A companion


        Turning horses out in pairs is helpful as they can stand head to tail and flick the flies from
        each other with their tails.



        A fly rug


        These protect a large area of the horse from biting flies both in the field and when stabled

        (Figure 25.5). Boett  Blankets are very effective for horses and ponies suffering from sweet
        itch.
