Protective face and ear covers give excellent protection (Figures 25.7a and b). They
should be made of a light, cool material and be a comfortable fit. Horses should be checked
regularly as flies sometimes become trapped inside them. They may not be suitable for every
situation. There is a concern that some designs restrict the horses’ vision which could lead to
an accident where playful youngsters are kept together in a group. There is also a view that
there are more paddock injuries in horses with fly masks as they cannot see each other’s
faces and expressions. Some horses are suspicious and frightened of the masks to begin with.
