        Good hygiene

Excellent stable hygiene and frequent removal of the muck heap will help to reduce the

        number of flies.

The use of fly repellents and creams

Fly repellents can be purchased from vets, saddlers and agricultural merchants. The
instructions should be followed carefully. It is advisable to test the product on a small area of
sensitive skin, e.g. the inside of the horse’s thigh, before treating the whole horse.

                                                                    ®
                                                                                                         ®
Insecticidal or barrier creams, e.g. Sudocream or petroleum jelly (Vaseline )can be
applied to the inside of the horse’s ears and the areas with only sparse hair cover on the
ventral midline around the udder and sheath. Deposits of cream should not be allowed to
build up inside the ears or enter the ear canal.

Insecticidal bands or tags can be attached to the headcollar or tied into the mane and

insecticidal wound powders may be applied to small cuts and grazes.
