        Treatment


        •    No treatment is required in the majority of cases.
        •    If heat and pain are present, a combination of rest and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory

             drugs is recommended.

        •    The balance of the foot should be checked and corrected if necessary.
        •    The  horse  should  be  shod  wide  at  the  quarters  and  heels  and  the  shoe  should  extend

             behind the heels to provide support and encourage expansion of the foot. No nails should

             be used any further back than the widest part of the hoof wall or they will interfere with
             the natural expansion of the foot when the horse bears weight.

        •    Fractures  heal  with  box  rest.  It  is  sometimes  necessary  to  remove  any  small  bone
             fragments that lose their blood supply and act as a foreign body.
