        Treatment

The only effective treatment is surgical removal of the infected area of cartilage. Broad
        spectrum antibiotics are given.

        Prognosis

The prognosis is good if all of the damaged and infected tissue is successfully removed.

        PEDAL OSTEITIS

Pedal osteitis is inflammation of the pedal bone (distal phalanx). In the past, the condition
has been overdiagnosed as a cause of foot pain on the basis of foot sensitivity, the response to

nerve blocks and the appearance of the pedal bone on radiographs. However, we now know
that the pedal bone can be variable in appearance on X-rays and there is no nerve block that

desensitizes the pedal bone without also numbing other tissues in the foot, thus it is hard to
        specifically diagnose the condition.
