        Diagnosis


        Diagnosis is made on the following.
        •    The clinical signs.

        •    The results of diagnostic analgesia. The horse may improve with analgesia of the digital

             sheath or with a low four- or six-point nerve block.
        •    Ultrasonography. The palmar annular ligament cannot normally be seen on an ultrasound

             examination  as  it  is  only  1–2  mm  (   in)  thick.  However,  subcutaneous  thickening,  a
             thickened ligament and digital sheath effusions are all readily visible.
