It is often helpful to compare the injured joint with the same area on the opposite limb.
Radiography
Radiographic signs of joint disease include:
• narrowing or disappearance of the joint space due to cartilage degeneration and loss
• increase of bone density directly below the joint; this is known as sclerosis
• decrease of bone density directly below the joint; this is known as lysis
• spurs of new bone at the joint margins
• intra-articular fractures (Figure 8.3)
• osteochondrosis lesions
• bone cysts below the cartilage
