Many fractures are obvious as soon as they have occurred. The horse may be unable to bear
weight on the limb and be in considerable pain, causing it to tremble or sweat. The leg may
be in an abnormal position (Figure 10.11) and crepitus (grating sensation of broken bones
rubbing together) may be heard or felt. With open fractures, the bone may even protrude
from the wound.
