• heat, pain and swelling over the splint bone
• pain when the fracture site is pressed
VetBooks.ir • a variable degree of lameness
•
an open wound over the fracture site when the fracture is caused by an external injury
such as a kick
• a discharging sinus over the splint bone; this is a small wound in the cannon area which
does not heal.
DIAGNOSIS
The diagnosis is usually confirmed by radiographic examination (Figure 10.13). If the wound
is infected, radiography is repeated after a few days to check for infection of the splint bone.
Ultrasonography is used to determine whether the suspensory ligament is involved and the
extent of any damage.
