imported into the country: any horse can bring EVA into the UK at any time.
The Code of Practice also contains guidelines for prevention of EVA transmission during
VetBooks.ir artificial insemination and embryo transfer.
Control of infection
If EVA is suspected:
• stop all breeding activities and contact your vet straight away
• The APHA should be notified immediately
• stop all movement of horses on and off the premises
• isolate the horse concerned
• if possible, a different person should look after each group of horses, this reduces the risk
of infection being spread.
• equipment, stables and contaminated vehicles must be cleaned and disinfected with an
approved disinfectant.
If EVA is confirmed, your vet will advise you on the steps necessary to control infection.
Current recommendations can be found on www.hblb.org.uk.

caused by the bacterium Streptococcus equi. (S. equi) It affects horses of all ages but young
animals are particularly susceptible. The incubation period is usually between 3–14 days.
Clinical signs
Strangles is characterized by swelling of the lymph nodes (glands) below the horse’s throat
and a thick yellow nasal discharge from one or both nostrils (Figure 15.4).
