The treatment requires hospitalization and the costs are considerable. The risk of
complications is high.
Prognosis
If the condition is diagnosed in the early stages and the correct treatment is started at once,
then the horse has a reasonable chance of recovery. If the disease is more long standing and
adhesions have formed, the prognosis for recovery and return to the previous level of
performance is poor.
Prevention
• If long journeys are unavoidable, horses should be allowed to rest, eat and drink
regularly. Their heads should not be tied up for lengthy periods.
• They should be allowed to recover fully from respiratory conditions before travelling or
competing.
