        PENIS

Small discrete lesions can be treated by a combination of surgical removal, cryotherapy, and
topical application of chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Large lesions are dealt with by partial or
total amputation of the penis. This procedure is known as phallectomy.

        Prognosis

The prognosis is generally good if the tumour is recognized early and can be removed with a

wide margin of healthy tissue. Aggressive tumours that are not treated immediately have a
guarded prognosis because of local spread. A possible complication of phallectomy is urinary
obstruction. If this cannot be relieved, euthanasia is necessary.

        Prevention

Fly masks that block ultraviolet light are recommended with susceptible animals, e.g.

        palominos, creams and appaloosas.
