The lesions are often symmetrical in distribution (i.e. occur on both sides of the horse) and
gradually enlarge. They most commonly occur in greys, Appaloosas and coloured horses, but
can be seen in horses of any colour. These areas are not inflamed or itchy as they develop.
Unfortunately, the hypopigmented areas around the eye may be easily irritated by
environmental factors such as sunlight and wind. Affected animals can experience sunburn,
conjunctivitis and erosions on the eyelid margins. They may then rub their eyes and cause
further damage. Exposure to sunlight can ultimately predispose to the development of
