Diagnosis
Diagnosis is made following a thorough examination of the eye. Some corneal injuries are
readily observed but very tiny ulcers or abrasions show up more clearly following the
application of various coloured dyes which stain them green or pink (Figure 21.8). The
appearance of the lesion can be suggestive of the cause but swabs, scrapings or biopsies are
necessary for confirmation of the diagnosis with deep or non-healing ulcers. The material can
be examined under the microscope to detect the presence and type of bacteria or fungi.
Antibiotic sensitivity testing is performed following culture of any bacteria.
