• Systemic non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication is often used to reduce the pain and
settle the inflammation within the eye. Flunixin meglumine (Finadyne™) and
VetBooks.ir • phenylbutazone are commonly used.
Topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drops or ointment are sometimes used but they
may be painful when applied and can delay healing.
• In some cases, surgery is indicated. With superficial ulcers that fail to heal, the damaged
epithelium is removed (debrided) so healing can begin.
• If the ulceration is severe, a pedicle of conjunctiva may be sutured over the debrided area
of cornea (Figure 21.9).
• The third eyelid may be sutured across the cornea for protection or the eyelids may be
temporarily sutured together.
• Another option for some corneal conditions is the use of an equine contact lens to act as a
bandage over the damaged eye.
