About Book I

The ideas presented in my books will take you about two hours to read. Understanding and being able
to fully perform each exercise will take longer. Accepting the advantages of my ideas and taking these
ideas to heart may take a lifetime.
Many of these ideas may seem simple at first but these ideas will become complex! My ideas adhere to a
simple secret code. The advantages of this secret code will help you improve your art. By using my code,
you will know when you are on the right track.
My watercolor paintings will be shown as an exemplary painting medium. I have also included an oil
painting, an acrylic painting, and a pencil drawing. This book is not a “how to paint book.” It is a “how to
think book.” I want this book to show you why design is important to the artist. I give a simple code to
help you with the task for painting.
Painting successfully immediately is presumptuous. It could take years to achieve success in art. My
books are a few of many that will help you to produce good art, to critique good art, and/or to teach good
art. First, you must review the basics. At the same time, I will elaborate on the advantages of each basic
rule coupled with my new information. My new information is a simple secret code.
I call this code “The Three Sisters.” My books have turned art instruction into a discourse of scientific
study. After all, during the Renaissance, art was considered a science. In later books, I will deal more
with the creative side of painting.
If you read art books and learn from them, you may become a better painter. Many self-taught artists
have read their way to painting success. Personally, I feel that instruction from a “qualified” art
instructor is faster and often better. An art school is best, but this book will prepare you for any art
school.
