Renowned California Artist Vernon Nye out on location with his students
Vernon Nye
In college I majored in Art, Graphic Arts, and Printing. Art and drawing were my strongest subjects. At
the college I attended there was a young, new art teacher who was on his way up on a list of California’s
watercolor painters to watch.
Mr. Vernon Nye was working on his goal to become one of California’s renowned watercolor artists. His
enthusiasm sparked a desire in me to become a good artist as well. Vernon Nye’s beautiful on location
watercolors inspired me to paint in watercolor.
Mr. Nye’s words of wisdom and stories of nationally known artists and their struggles for achievement
was my favorite way of learning from him. Vernon Nye was a walking encyclopedia of “Who’s Who” in
watercolor in America. He loved taking his students on field trips.
I took the above photo on one of my first field trips. Mr. Nye took his art students to the back hills of St.
Helena. These hills are above the famous Napa Valley grape growing region of California. I got my start
in outdoor painting with Vernon Nye.
