AVOIDING DELAYS IN
PERMIT APPROVAL
Once your engineered drawings are completed,
to ensure minimal delays with your Township
Building Department, it is recommended that you
speak to your Building Official and ensure you
have all the documentation they need to process

request that all documentation be submitted
at once so they have all the information they
require to review and approve the permit. Having
to communicate back and forth for missing
information, time spent in tracking down the
information and having the Township reject
your application due to lack of information can
cause more delays in your project than you
originally anticipated. For most Townships, the
documents required in a permit application
include two copies of engineer-stamped
drawings or designer drawings containing the
Designer’s BCIN, engineered drawings, precast
drawings and truss drawings, if applicable, your
nutrient management plan or strategy, any site
characterization studies from the Geotechnical
Engineer, and the completed permit application
accompanied by a Commitment to General
Review form and a cheque for your permit fees.
Most building department staff are more than
happy to walk you through the permit application
process and can usually explain any documents or
requirements that you might be unfamiliar with.
Ensure part of your planning process includes
a chat with your local building department
to ensure you provide all the documentation
they require in the initial permit application
submission to ensure that your permit approval
is provided in a timely manner and fits with your
construction time lines.
