PARENTING: TYPES AND EFFECTS ON CHILDREN
Parenting styles significantly influence a child's development and can be broadly categorized into
four main types: Authoritative, Authoritarian, Permissive, and Uninvolved. Each style has distinct
characteristics and varying impacts on children's behavior, emotional well-being, and overall
development.
1. Authoritative Parenting
Characteristics:
- High responsiveness and high demands.
- Sets clear standards and enforces rules.
- Encourages independence while maintaining limits
- Open communication and nurturing.
Effects on Children:
- Tend to be happy, capable, and successful.
- Good social skills and high self-esteem.
- Better emotional regulation and problem-solving abilities.
2. Authoritarian Parenting
Characteristics:
- High demands and low responsiveness.
- Strict rules and expectations with little flexibility.
- Punitive discipline with less warmth.
- Limited open dialogue; parent-driven decisions
Effects on Children:
- Often obedient and proficient, but with lower happiness levels.
- May exhibit anxiety, low self-esteem, and social skills.
- Higher risk of developing aggressive behavior outside the home.
3. Permissive Parenting
Characteristics:
- High responsiveness and low demands.
- Few rules or expectations.
- Indulgent, with an emphasis on freedom.
- Open communication but more of a friend than a parent role.
Effects on Children:
- Often struggle with self-discipline and authority.
- Tend to have higher self-esteem but may exhibit behavioral problems.
- May face difficulties in academic and social settings due to lack of boundaries.
