  Chain splice: joins a rope to a normal small link in a chain, enabling the whole to pass through a

  naval pipe.


  Unlay one strand for about six or seven turns and set it aside. Reeve the remaining two strands
  through the end link of the chain and back to the point at which the single strand has been unlaid. Then
  unlay the two strands back towards the chain, leaving only enough laid rope to form the eye itself.
  Now unlay the first strand for a further six or seven turns (figure 24) and replace it in the rope by one

  of the other two strands, just as in a long splice (see page 111) until the second strand reaches the
  point to which the first strand is unlaid. Cut the remaining unlaid strand at a length that allows it to be
  tucked, one over and one under, against the lay for four or five times, working around the rope. Now

  cut the first strand to the same length as the unlaid end of the second strand, and tuck away both of
  these strands.
