To make it, form a bight in the rope and take this up behind the beam or loadbearing arm, and bring it
down in front of the beam. Pull the standing part through the bight to form a second bight (figure
56.1), through which you pull the working end to form a third bight (figure 56.2). If you then pull
down tight the standing part, which is the left-hand hanging end in our illustration, this will support a
load. However as figure 56.2 also clearly illustrates, the right-hand side end will not; any load
applied to that end will simply pull the rope through, thus releasing the knot.
