PENDLETON EXHIBIT

The Newcomb Historical Museum is pleased to announce the opening of its
fall exhibit, “Pendleton: The Man and the Settlement” in recogni-
tion of Judge Nathaniel Pendleton (1756-1821) and the six founding families
that settled in this Adirondack community. The exhibit presents an inter-
esting interpretation of how Pendleton came to be affiliated with land north
of Hyde Park, New York, where he lived with his wife, Susannah Bard.

A native Virginian and Revolutionary War hero who served for
eight years in the Southern Campaign, Pendleton became an influential and
wealthy New Yorker after his marriage. His political affiliations in state and
national politics were deep and respected. One of note was his friendship
with Alexander Hamilton. They were close enough that Hamilton selected
Pendleton to serve as his “second” in the infamous duel with Aaron Burr
held on July 11, 1804. The fateful outcome left Pendleton very remorseful.
