Cling On To
In our dhamma practice, we should cling (Koh, เกาะ) tightly on to every phenomenon. We do this so that we can experience, in a timely manner, every instance that the phenomenon emerges or ceases.
Cultivate Mindfulness
We use the phrase Cultivate Mindfulness to translate the word Charoensati (เจริญสติ). To cultivate mindfulness means to develop one’s mindfulness, to make it better. To cultivate mindfulness is not the same as to wilfully contemplate (Kumnode, กาหนด). To wilfully contemplate means to experience the emergence-cessation of all phenomena, which will lead to wisdom. Alternatively, cultivating mindfulness may only focus on strengthening our mindfulness, boosting our concentration. Cultivating mindfulness without wilful contemplation of the emergence- cessation phenomena will not lead to wisdom.
Defilement
Defilement is a translation of Kilesa (กเิ ลส). Defilements are things that defile our mind, making them unclean. Defilements could also be viewed generally as any causes of sufferings (greed, anger, delusion) that, when they emerge, lead to sadness.
