Initial Mind
The initial mind is Tonjit (ต้นจิต). The initial mind is the mind that experiences one’s phenomena before they actually emerge, such as being aware that one is about to blink before actually blinking.
Insights
We use the phrase “have insights” to translate the Thai word Kaotueng (เข้าถึง). Literally, kaotueng means to access and reach a specific destination, goal or target—as opposed to kaojai (เขา้ ใจ), which simply means to understand. When practicing dhamma, if we passively observe the emergence-cessation phenomena; if there is a clear gap between our mind and the phenomena—then we do not have insights. But, if our mind and the phenomena are in the same place, and we fully experience the emergence- cessation, then we have insights.
Insight Meditation Practice
Insight Meditation Practice refers specifically to Vipassana (วิปัสสนา). Insight meditation practice means experiencing the emergence-cessation phenomena; experiencing the Three Characteristics of Beings (Trilaksana, ไตรลักษณ์). Meditation practice that aims to achieve only serenity is called Tranquillity Development (Samathabhavana, สมถภาวนา).
