He went from not knowing a thing about finance to
becoming actively involved in managing his portfolio, which
included everything from stocks and mutual funds to
property. He alsorecognised how things in the music
industry had changed from his time with Guns & Roses
which he left in 1997:
“We were playing shows then where shows were a loss
leader to sell albums. Now it’s completely the opposite,” he
said. “You make the most off your ticket receipts and T-
shirts. Now the sexy thing is ‘How many T-shirts did you sell,’
not records. No one talks about records.”He had realised
two things:
1) that he was pretty good at money management and
2) fellow musicians were comfortable being counselled by
him because he didn’t “wear a suit” and therefore wasn’t
representative of ‘The Man’.
Once the word spread that Duff knew his numbers, his
phone started ringing. Other musicians were regularly
looking for financial advice, which inspired the idea of
creating a company which would bridge the the gap
between musicians and their money and the best way of
looking after it. October 2011, saw Meridian Rock Capital
Management, was launch, gear towards musicians with
