The Peanut Corporation is a short
case and shows how a company can
run foul of the law.

Stewart Parnell, the 61-year-old
former head of Peanut Corporation
of America, who had been facing a maximum of 803 years
behind bars was sentenced to 28 years for crimes related to
a salmonella outbreak blamed for killing nine and sickening
hundreds. Defense attorneys argued that Parnell did not
know about mismanagement at the plant, that he was the
fall guy for other employees' wrongdoing. But a damning e-
mail Parnell wrote in a March 2007 to a plant manager
about contaminated products said: "Just ship it."
