Pepsi rapidly withdrew the advert and apologised saying:
"Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity,
peace and understanding. Clearly we missed the mark,
and we apologize. We did not intend to make light of
any serious issue. We are removing the content and
halting any further rollout. We also apologize for
putting Kendall Jenner in this position."
but the damage had already been done. Pepsi had put its
product in the centre of social issues while simultaneously
trivializing those issues.
Getting the right tone with an advert is crucial and Pepsi’s
blunder shows just how damaging a careless attitude can
be.
