describing my skin as “20% dry, 80% glowing”, and
appearing again at the end. I loved it, and everyone
around me seemed to as well. I think the full TV edit
does a much better job of making the campaign’s
message loud and clear.”
In a statement to Reuters, Dove clarified that the video
“was intended to convey that Dove body wash is for
every woman and be a celebration of diversity, but we
got it wrong.”
Lesson learned: While context certainly helps, Dove—or any
brand, for that matter—should never create an ad that
could so easily be taken out of context, especially one that
could read as having a racist message.
