The four largest banks — HSBC, Barclays, RBS and Lloyds

The £45bn bailout of RBS by the UK Government was
considered State Aid by the EC. To ensure that RBS did not
gain an unfair advantage over other banks, it had to take
measures to reduce its size and market share. To this end
the EC required RBS to sell off five parts of the business,
four of which it achieved.
