P. 115
(10:17-18) – The Father, (God actively present in Heaven) loves the Son (God actively present on Earth) because
He accepted the duty to be the good shepherd, laying down His life for the sheepfold of
humanity. The good shepherd surrendered His life by choice not under force or duress. He
laid down His life by choice knowing He had the power to raise it up again.
The Father, (God actively present in Heaven) declared (commandment) that He would raise Him up to
lead the sheep out of the containment into eternal life. (Acts 2:24, 10:40, Rom. 4:24, 8:11)
John 10:19 - There was a division therefore again among the Jews for
these sayings.
John 10:20 - And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why
hear ye him?
John 10:21 - Others said, These are not the words of him that hath a devil.
Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?
Lesson Notes:
(10:19-21) – Another division arises among Jewish leaders with conflicting viewpoints about the
identity and fate of Jesus-Messiah. There is a contingent that held fast to previous claims that
He was possessed with a devil and driven mad. An opposing faction disputing the claims that
His teaching was inspired by a devil further challenged the possibility of a person possessed by
a devil to open the eyes of the blind; referring to the blind son they detained and examined in
John 9:16.
John 10:22 - And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was
winter.
John 10:23 - And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch.
John 10:24 - Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him,
How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.
Lesson Notes:
(10:22) – The focus shifted to the Temple Dedication festival that honors Matthias Maccabee, a
temple priest, and his sons for restoring the Jewish Temple defiled by a tyrant Seleucid King and
the Holy Oil that lasted eight days in the Temple Menorah. The feast occurs in Kislev
(December) during the winter season.
(10:23-24) – Jesus-Messiah enters an area within the long colonnade that surrounds the temple
courtyard known as Solomon’s porch. Jews divided in their opinions and wrestling to know the
truth come to Him asking to tell them outright if He is the Christ so it would release them from
any further doubt and debate among their peers.
