P. 118
John 10:37 - If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.
John 10:38 - But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that
ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.
John 10:39 - Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out
of their hand,
John 10:40 - And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where
John at first baptized; and there he abode.
John 10:41 - And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle:
but all things that John spake of this man were true.
John 10:42 - And many believed on him there.
Lesson Notes:
(10:37-38) – The son of God (God actively present on Earth) is willing to settle on their judgment
against if they can prove that the works (miracles) He has done are not of or inspired by God
the Father (God actively present in Heaven).
If the works are of God, then He challenges them to settle the debate and believe the works to
justify believing that He and the God the father are one.
The works (miracles) provided tangible evidence in the place of non-visible evidence they
wanted to validate His identity. The miracle of the blind man having brand new eyesight could
not be disputed. Truth about something that is not visible can be validated by truth that is
visible and indisputable. If the visible evidence affirms God is at work, then we must trust the
vessel or the vehicle that He chooses to work through.
(10:39-40) – Without any more rational reasons to defend their unbelief they try to take the
Son of God (God actively present on Earth) into custody. He successfully escapes again because it is not
yet time to end His ministry on earth. He finds a place to still away just beyond the Jordan river
where John Baptized.
(10:41-42) –Attraction to the Messiah and His truth is evident, even while there is a great
debate led by religious naysayers. Many people found their way to the Jordan to see Him. John
the Baptizer was not known for his miracles (works) but people were certain that he was an
accurate porter; announcing and introducing the man Jesus as the Messiah. Everything John
foretold of Him were proven to be true.
Many more become believers restoring the numbers of followers to replace the defectors that
walked away in the previous year.
