P. 116
John 10:25 - Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the
works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.
John 10:26 - But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, (admittingly
disciples of Moses – cp 9:28) as I said unto you.
John 10:27 - My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow
me:
John 10:28 - And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish,
neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
John 10:29 - My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no
man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
John 10:30 - I and my Father are one.
Lesson Notes:
(10:25-27) – With correction, He responds, clarifying what He has already told them. He
reminds them of their failure to believe Him or the works that He has done. He expounds on
the reason for their unbelief, siting that they are not His sheep. Previously, the Jews asking for
more oral ratification, proudly described themselves as disciples of Moses. (John 9:28) The
Messiah is forcing them to own their spoken truth and used it as the barrier that prevented
them from hearing and knowing His voice. The sheep of the Shepherd are His disciples and
they respond to the truth and to His voice.
(10:28) – The sheep of the Shepherd will never perish because they have access to eternal life.
The word perish in the text, comes from the Greek work “apollumi” which means to lose or be
destroyed. The Shepherd-Messiah provides assurance that no man has the power or ability to
pull, seize, or take away (pluck) any life that is in His hand. The assurance provides a guarantee
that outside forces are not strong enough to take the Shepherds sheep from His possession.
(10:29-30) – The sheep are in the Father’s, (God actively present in Heaven) hand, He gave them to the
Shepherd [the Son of God: (God actively present on Earth)] and continues to hold onto them as His
own, making it impossible for any force to pluck them away from the two hands that actively
hold them; the Father (God actively present in Heaven) and the Son (God actively present on Earth).
Two hands of one God holding the sheep in the grips of eternal life, because the Father and Son
are one.
John 10:31 - Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. (attempts to kill
him: 5:18, 7:21, 8:37 )
John 10:32 - Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you
from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?
John 10:33 - The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone
thee not; but for blasphemy; (to speak against God) and because that thou, being
a man, makest thyself God.
John 10:34 - Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye
are gods?
