                                            The Last Word

                                             Dan Bartlett

For some reason this winter session so far seems longer than usual, probably because of the recent
lockdown period. There is, however, something to look forward to. We’re over the winter hump and spring is

on its way in. For me it’s the time of year where I look forward to travelling, as long as pandemic restrictions
will allow it. In a recent poll of members at another club, we were asked where we would like to visit
post-pandemic. Everyone else indicated some place outside of Canada. I said northern Ontario. Most of you
wouldn’t be surprised by this because a lot of my photography has been taken north of Highway 7 and as far
north as Cochrane. It’s the area where I was raised and there always seems to be something drawing me
         back there.

I have been to many places including the European continent, Scandinavia, the Caribbean and all provinces

except Newfoundland and Labrador. However, I feel most at home in Ontario, particularly the north. During
my travels I’ve visited many spectacular areas and still have more to explore. There are many photographic
opportunities available and you don’t have to make too many travel arrangements, worry about currency
         exchanges or foreign languages.

The point I would like to make is that there are many wonderful areas to visit in our home province. We have
boreal forests, the Canadian shield, amazing wildlife, spectacular waterfalls and rapids and wonderful places
like Manitoulin Island, the Temagami area and the north Shore of Lake Superior, all within 2 to 8 hours from
home (a bit longer to Lake Superior). I would hope that some of you would prefer visiting some of these
areas and not have to worry about travelling in planes and cruise ships until well beyond Covid-19. It is worth
thinking about, in my opinion. My last word on this is that I will eventually make it to Newfoundland.
