Glossary of Terms
Technical Expert
A person who provides specific knowledge or
expertise on the subject to be audited.
Top Management
Person or group of people who directs and controls
an organization at the highest level.
Third-Party Audits
Certification audits involving a company, their
customer and a certification body. The audits are
carried out by an independent organization and are
very inflexible, since an audit process must be
followed completely. Reports go to the company and
the certification body. Third-party audits can be
conducted “with independent oversight” and “without
independent oversight.” See Chapter 2 for information
on the value of independent oversight.
Traceability
Ability to trace the history, location, and application of
that which is under consideration. When considering
product, traceability can relate to the origin of
materials and parts, the processing history and the
distribution and location of the product after delivery.
Validation
Confirmation that a product or service appropriately
meets its design function or intended use (typically by
physical testing).
